The Virginia Nutrient Credit Exchange Association is a voluntary association of 71 owners of 107 treatment facilities cleaning wastewater in the Chesapeake Bay watershed to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus.
The Nutrient Exchange was established in 2005 to coordinate and facilitate nutrient credit trading among its members to help improve water quality efficiently and cost-effectively. Today, the Nutrient Exchange is considered the largest and most successful water quality trading program in the United States.
